SPONSOR OUR FIRST PROJECT IN UGANDA 🇺🇬

Walking for Water has never done a project in Uganda before, but we have now received an application from there.

Because we have never done a project in Uganda before, we have also not previously had a partner in the country who can monitor the construction of our projects. LUCKILY, @maja_langvad, who is one of our wonderful volunteers, knows Peter and Sharon from @iremboholidays, who have visited Kitsutsu Village and made a field report for us 🌍

𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓲𝓽𝓾𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓷𝓸𝔀💧
The people of Kitsutsu Village currently get their water from a stream that flows from Mt. Rwenzori, locally known as Mwanda Stream, which dries up for parts of the year.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀:
- Since it is a seasonal stream, it dries up and the residents therefore have to walk another 2.4 to 4 km to the next nearest water source.
- In the dry season, most households will live on one meal a day to save water.
- When it rains, the water becomes muddy as soil is collected further up the stream.
- Some people relieve themselves in or near the stream of water.
- Further upstream, the water is used to prepare the local brew, which contaminates the rest of the water that flows down to the residents of Kitsutsu village.

A well for 366 people 💧

In Beiwala Section in Sierra Leone, 366 people finally have access to clean drinking water, and once again @lovespringwaterforwater is the sponsor 💙

There are many problems associated with the lack of clean water. One of the problems is that it is often the girls in the families who are responsible for fetching clean drinking water. It can be a dangerous, time-consuming and physically demanding task. Long trips on foot, often several times a day, can make the girls particularly vulnerable to assault, and it prevents them from going to school or earning an income. That is why it is so important to have clean drinking water nearby!

PROJECT VALIDATION 🤔 💧

When W4W receive applications from local communities in need of water, we use multiple methods of validation to make sure the need is sincere and that funds are spent as cost effectively as possible.

The first thing we do is to ask the applying community for the coordinates of the wished borehole site, as well as the coordinates of the nearest improved public available water services.

As we only operate in areas with limited access to water, we do not accept applications proposing a borehole within 1,5 kilometres of an existing functional and covering public improved water service 🔍

We’ll then send the coordinates to our sponsor and partner Nocera Limited (https://noceralimited.com) whom specialises in providing Cartographic information, carrying out spatial surveys and developing tools for better management of geospatial data 👨🏿‍💼📊

Nocera Limited uses satellite photos and software to calculate the number of buildings within a 1,5 kilometres radius of the proposed borehole. We then use public available data to calculate the average number of inhabitants per household to estimate the number of people whom will get basic access to clean water if we go ahead and build the project 🛰 🗺

The price of the project is then divided with the number of beneficiaries, and if the price per beneficiary is below or around our average of 2,5$ per beneficiary we accept the project.

Before any funds are sent, our local partners visits the community to make a field report and assess if the infomations about population size and current water situation are sincere.

We have developed all these procedures over time from experience after raising funds for a total of 64 water services across Africa in cooperation with our local partners, to give our sponsors confidence that their money is spent efficiently, where they make the most impact.
